High school student, Rachel Zegler, 17, was cast as Maria in "West Side Story" remake among 30,000 applicants. The news came in almost a year after the student responded to a casting call for Latino and Latina actors. The Typical Student team learned the details.

Who Is Rachel Zegler?

Rachel Zegler, who is "honored" to have been cast in the role, will be starring alongside some of the most famous Broadway veterans. Before being cast for West Side Story, Rachel’s only experience was playing in a high school musical. She wrote on her Instagram: "When I played Maria on stage a few summers ago, I never could have imagined that I'd be taking on the role again in Steven Spielberg's 'West Side Story'."

According to student, this role is a huge breakthrough for the Hispanic community and is "humbling" to her as a Colombian-American woman. Rachel has a solid YouTube following. On her channel, she describes herself as a "singer/songwriter who works as a wedding singer." She has uploaded her cover versions of hits from Queen, Ariana Grande and Sia.
