Ramadan is the most important period of fasting observed by Muslims all over the world. Ramadan celebrates the moment of unveiling the Koran to Muhammad. However, what else a common person knows about this Muslim sacred fast?

When Is Ramadan 2018?

As a matter of fact, the beginning and end of Ramadan depend on the lunar Islamic calendar. In this way, this year the fast began on the evening of Wednesday, May 16 and will end on the evening of Thursday, June 14. Besides, the holiest night of a year, according to the Muslim belief, is “the night of power” as it is the night when the first revelation of the Koran was revealed to Muhammad. Accordingly, this year it is thought to have occurred during the last ten days of the holy month ( the 21, 23, 25, 27 or 29th). Besides, the last day of the Ramadan is the holiday of Eid al-Fitr which marks the beginning of the next lunar month.

What Can/Can’t Muslims Do During the Holy Month of Ramadan?

First of all, Muslims cannot neglect fasting. If you are an adult Muslim and are not suffering from an illness, traveling, pregnant, breastfeeding or elderly you must fast from sunrise to sunset. Which means that you cannot eat or drink during the day. Besides, smoking and taking medicines during the Ramadan are also prohibited. Muslims also have to practice their self-discipline and read the entire Koran during the holy month before the sacred holiday of Eid al-Fitr. In addition, Muslims should abstain from sexual relations and cleanse their souls by getting rid of harmful impurities. Moreover, during Ramadan it is important to do some charity work and to help those who were less lucky in life.

What Can/Can’t Muslims Eat During the Ramadan?

As it has been already said, during Ramadan Muslims eat only before the dawn and after the sunset. There are only two mealtimes during the Ramadan – Suhur and Iftar. Suhur is a first meal which Muslims have before sunrise. Respectively, Iftar is an evening meal which Muslims eat after the sunset. Usually, Iftar meal consists of water, juices, appetizers and salads, dates, one or more main dishes, and different kinds of desserts. Topically, the main dish can be  lamb, lamb kebabs, chicken or grilled vegetables. In addition, Muslims cannot overeat despite the fact that they are prohibited from eating during the day.

How Many Times Do Muslims Pray During the Ramadan?

The first prayer is performed at dawn after the Suhur. Then Muslims usually have their casual day. The second prayer is in the evening and usually followed by another special prayer which is only performed during Ramadan. So, basically there are three main prayers during each day of the holy month of Ramadan.

Hence, Ramadan is the holiest Muslim fast which is deeply rooted in the Muslim traditions.
