LeBron James is truly iconic, and here’s yet another proof to this. Previously, the Typical Student team told you about the new I PROMISE school founded by LeBron in 240 At-Risk US Students Get a Chance to Study at LeBron James New I PROMISE School in Ohio (PHOTOS INSIDE). Now, people are rooting for him to replace Betsy Devos! But will LeBron James agree to become the next secretary of education?
The Voice of the People
The petition started by Care2 user Rebecca G. has gathered 41,000+ signatures at the time of writing. And, there are only a few thousands of signatures left before the final goal of 45,000 is reached. Wonder, how President Trump listed as the recipient of the petition will react to this. For it looks very much like people are asking for James, 33, to replace DeVos, 60, as the U.S. Secretary of Education!
Last month, basketball superstar opened a school for the at-risk kids and has been all over the media ever since. Meanwhile, Betsy DeVos has been slammed multiple times for her flawed educational policies. See Betsy DeVos: Still US Education Secretary After These 4 EPIC Fails!
Now, according to the Dailymail, she is facing severe backlash over her $40M yacht used in Michigan but registered under a Cayman Islands flag.
What’s In the Petition?
In the petition, the candidates are clearly defined. LeBron James is dubbed a “highly respected and extremely influential community advocate and activist who recently opened a state-of-the-art public school for at-risk children in Akron, Ohio.”
Meanwhile, the petition names Betsy DeVos “a scandal-ridden Republican donor who shows an inexcusable dislike for public education, wants to gut protections for women and minorities, and has advocated for teachers to be armed in schools.”
All the talk aside, the world-famous NBA superstar personally donated millions of dollars to support disadvantaged students vis LeBron James Family Foundation. He has been working to secure sponsorship, and is believed to have enormous influence on the school program.
What Triggered the Petition?
It is believed, the petition appeared as people’s reaction to Trump slamming James on Twitter following the athlete's interview with Don Lemon on the I PROMISE public school opening.
Trump tweeted: 'Lebron James was just interviewed by the dumbest man on television, Don Lemon. He made Lebron look smart, which isn’t easy to do. I like Mike!'
As a result, the Twitterverse erupted with a debate about James being a much better choice for the US secretary of education position. Obviously, accusing James of being less than smart, was a huge miss on the Trump’s part.
