Saoirse Kennedy Hill, 22, the granddaughter of Robert F. Kennedy, sadly passed away at the Kennedy compound in Hyannis Port. According to news reports, the Kennedy family issued a statement to the Associated Press, with a death confirmation: "Our hearts are shattered by the loss of our beloved Saoirse." The Typical Student team learned the details.
"She lit up our lives with her love, her peals of laughter and her generous spirit," the statement said, noting that Hill was passionate about human rights, women's empowerment and volunteer work in indigenous communities. "We will love her and miss her forever."
Mental Illness - Possible Cause Of Death?
The official statement didn't state the cause of death, the New York Times and The Hyannis News reported that Hill "died of an apparent overdose." The Barnstable police allegedly responded to "a reported unattended death" Thursday afternoon.
Saoirse Kennedy Hill was a student at Boston College enrolled in the class of 2020. Prior to that, she went to Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, Massachusetts, where she confessed she was having mental health issues.
In her 2016 essay for the school's student newspaper, she wrote:
"My depression took root in the beginning of my middle school years and will be with me for the rest of my life.
"Although I was mostly a happy child, I suffered bouts of deep sadness that felt like a heavy boulder on my chest."
Saoirse confessed that she was making attempts to take her own life two weeks before her junior year began. She took a "medical leave" from school to receive treatment for depression. Hill was planning to return to Deerfield Academy in her senior year.
The Family Curse
The death of Saoirse is another tragedy that has happened to the Kennedy family, adding to the so-called "Kennedy curse." The list of tragedies includes the assassination of Hill's grandfather, "Bobby" Kennedy. He was murdered the night he was celebrating his victory in the New York and California presidential primaries in the 1968 election. Prior to Bobby's death, his brother, former President Kennedy, was tragically shot in 1963.
As for the other members of the Kennedy family, have died from different causes. Among the causes of death were plane crashes, World War II, alcohol and drug addiction, and other accidents.
