A student at an Ohio high school created a racist promposal and is now apologizing for it. As told by CNN, the "racist sign got him banned from prom". The Typical Student team learned the details.
Why Is Promposal Sign Racist?
The sign made by a Clear Fork High School student reads as follows: "If I was black I'd be picking cotton but I'm white so I'm picking u for prom." The student's name has not been disclosed, as he has received death threats since the incident became public. It is unknown if the sign hit the spot and got the student the prom date. According to the school superintendent, he's not going to prom. Sadly, this isn't the first time a similar sign has been used in a promposal. Last April, a senior from Florida high school held a sign with the same phrase on it.
How Did School Officials React To The Sign?
After a conversation with school administrators, the student and has apologized. In an interview to CNN, Clear Fork Valley Local Schools Superintendent Janice Wyckoff commented on the incident: "What I thought was, how disappointing — this is in 2019 — we are still dealing with this stuff, with racial slurs." It is reported that the student apologized on his family's social media while the family refused to make a statement. Here's what he wrote:
"I'm sorry for upsetting anyone, I didn't mean it like that. I'm really sorry, I will say sorry to anyone. I didn't mean to hurt you or anything like that, it was just for a laugh. I'm sorry, I really am. I'll say it to your face or anything really."
