Great news, guys! Hopefully, there'll be no more revenge porn victims in New York, as now it's officially illegal. Tuesday, a New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed legislation that classifies posting revenge porn as a class A misdemeanor, Mashable reports. The new law will come into effect in 60 days. What Classifies As Posting Revenge Porn?

Under the new legislation, revenge porn is defined as “the criminal act of unlawful dissemination or publication of an intimate image when done with the intent to cause harm to the emotional, financial, or physical welfare of another person and when the image was taken with a reasonable expectation that the image would remain private.”

 

Penalty For Revenge Porn Distribution

Individuals guilty of sharing revenge porn will face up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine in the state of New York. With this law, New York became the 42nd state that passed revenge porn criminalization law.  

 

What About Deepfakes?

At the beginning of July, Virginia officially expanded its revenge porn ban to include realistic fake videos and photos. This includes so-called "deepfakes" generated by AI. The amendment that was passed earlier in 2019, came into effect on July 1. Thus, Virginia became one of the first states with a law officially prohibiting "deepfakes."
